Yaesu packed a lot of features and performance into a package that's just the right size for those of us who don't have an entire room to devote to the hobby. Not quite a week of ownership yet, I believe the FT-991 gets a lot of things right. The menus & function screens take some practice, but having used an IC-706MkIIG for a number of years it's pretty easy to get back in the habit. The aircraft band coverage is handy as I can pick up the ATIS from the local Int'l airport about 9 miles away with a 2m vertical dipole in one of the glass windows. On 80m I can copy and be heard on the east coast nets (VN, 4RN). I built one that can handle up to 75w, so I'm in business and the auto-tuner in the radio easily brings VSWR down to 1:1 (it's about 2.0-2.3 at resonance on the MLA tuner). The condo where I live is *SATURATED* with RFI noise from the various electrical sources & gadgets within the building, and since *NO* outside antennas are allowed that means an HF mag-loop is the only thing that works. One feature set of particular importance to me is the DNR.

From my perspective, this is a great radio - compact, more easily transportable for portable ops, great band coverages, decent power levels on VHF/UHF (and I love that it covers 70cm), good CW keying for HF (I'm a traffic hound, arf!), and plenty of bells & whistles to play with. Since moving to a retirement condo I needed a more compact radio than my TS-2000X, so I sold the Kenwood to a friend (he loves it) and bought a Yaesu FT-991A from HRO. I think it is aimed at the traditional ham radio and the radio traffic on a single frequency, not at the ham radio "switcher" interested also in general spectrum reception. Yaesu has never struck me as very innovative. And what could make the difference, like a practical ergonomics adapted to a broadband receiver, regular firmware improvements, SDR features related to the internal electronics (the FT991A has a 1 MHz spectrum, so couldn't we have it on an intermediate frequency output), is missing. The radio qualities are excellent, but today on this point all the devices are almost equal.

Why is only C4FM offered in digital voice mode, while professional traffic in the V/UHF bands, received by the FT991A, use mostly DMR, and radio amateurs too? (in fact, we know it, and we are guilty, we ham radio, to accept devices with proprietary technology). Why the scanning based on the chosen frequency step, should it be done not with the tuning knob but with the "multi" knob, not adapted to this use and very badly placed for a right-handed person since one also systematically touches the tuning knob ? Why propose to listen to wide bands like 420 to 470 MHz, and limit the tuning to a much too slow speed, even in fast mode, only proportional to the knob rotation speed? My disappointment came from the fact that despite its wide reception coverage and its SDR-like spectrum display, despite the multitude of options and menus, the device remains a ham radio device that cannot be used in a practical way for anything other than classical traffic on an amateur band.įor example, why offer the "air" band without the 8.333 KHz frequency step which is the standard today? The FT991A seemed to fit the bill, with a good value for money, and with extensive receive coverage in V/UHF. I needed a compact TRX with all bands up to UHF. Internal High SpeedĪutomatic Antenna Tuner included in the package. (Automatic Spectrum-scope control) built right in. Superior operability and visibility, High Speed Spectrum scope with

FYI: My callsign has changed from KN4GKU to K4MUS. Thanks and I hope you all have a great evening. There really is not a lot out there though so any help would be appreciated. I have tried going online, YouTube and other sources to check settings and everything seems fine but I have a feeling I missed something. When I transmit, the radio goes into transmit mode and it looks like the signal is being transmitted on the waterfall screen but I am getting nothing from anyone which means the transmit is being done locally but not really going out. However on digital modes, something is not right.

All USB drivers are installed correctly and working. This radio does digital via the USB on my laptop.

Does anyone out there use the Yaesu FT-991A with Ham Radio Deluxe? I am having a little trouble with digital modes. Happy New Year everyone! I hope your new year started off right (By that I mean plenty of DX-ing).
